Gordon Wayne Thompson
Gordon Wayne Thompson aka "Uncle Gordo" passed away April 1, 2008, at his home after a short illness. He was 69.
Gordon was born July 21, 1938, in Arkansas City, Kan., the son of Leonard Joseph Thompson and Mary Kathryn Baker Thompson. He attended schools in Cedar Vale, Kan., as well as Arkansas City Junior College in Arkansas City, Kan.
After college, he worked at KSOK radio station in Arkansas City. He served in the United States Air Force until May 21, 1962, as an airman first class stationed in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged from active duty at that time.
After returning home, he held several offices with the Chamber of Commerce in Paola, Kan., Santa Fe, N.M., Clovis, N.M., Boise, Idaho, and Alliance, Neb.
He returned to Winfield and worked in radio there and in Grand Lake until becoming the co-owner of KIXR radio station in Ponca City, where he continued to work until the time of his death.
Gordon is survived by the love of his life, Carol Murphy-Thompson; sons, Kevin and wife Tonya of Silver City, N.M., Kyle and wife Jenny of San Marcos, Texas, and Carey and wife Sondra of San Marcos, Texas; sister, Gayla Eaglin of Winfield, Kan., brothers, Dwight Thompson and wife Lessie of Cedar Vale, Kan., Norman Thompson and wife Janice of Newkirk; and sister, Lila Hudgins and husband Roger of Bartlesville.
He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gary.
Gordon belonged to numerous organizations including Ambucs and VVA, of which he was a lifetime member, American Legion Riders, Goldwingers, Patriot Guards, Bikers Against Child Abuse and Three Sands ABATE. He also had a special group of friends who met every morning called the Coffee Church Group. His enjoyments included motorcycles and airplanes.
The funeral will be held Saturday, April 5, at 10 a.m. in the Ponca City worship center of First Baptist Church, 5th & Central officiated by the Rev. H. Dean LaVelle, pastor of the Bible Christian Church, Arkansas City, Kan. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City, Kan., under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Casket bearers will be Steve Struble, Kyce Goodno, Jan Jarrett, Tom Burg, Wayne Leven, Veryn Hoyer, Gary Miles, Bobby Gibson and Charlie Smith. Honorary casket bearers will be Art Schavezze, Lynn Martin, The Coffee Church Group, Ambucs, Goldwingers and BACA.
